Language-Oriented Instruction

SPAN 2010 Intermediate Spanish

  • Focused on the developing of Spanish speaking and writing skills, through the teaching of new vocabulary terms and the practice of daily grammar activities in order to grow in the Spanish language. Allowed me to begin communicating in Spanish with other Spanish-speakers through a Talk Abroad program and be able to progress in my skills through various video and writing assignments.

SPAN 3050 Intermediate Spanish Conversation and Composition I

  • This course allowed me to better improve my proficiency level in Spanish speaking through the use of group conversations in class about varied materials, partnered movie discussions, videotaping assignments, and was completely taught in Spanish. A creation of a digital website allowed us to demonstrate our improvement in our Spanish speaking and writing skills over time.

SPAN 2020 Intermediate Spanish

  • This course continued to develop and improve skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish, following similar activities presented in SPAN 2010.

SPAN 4110 Advanced Spanish Conversation and Composition (Santiago de Compostela, Spain)

  • In this course, we reviewed the different grammatical structures learned in previous Spanish class and put our Spanish skills into practice through group activities and discussions, listening exercises, as well as the creation of special projects or presentations. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 4090 – Comprehensive Writing in Spanish (Santiago de Compostela, Spain)

  • This course allowed me the opportunity to improve my written Spanish skills through composing blog posts, newspaper articles, and reviews of real events and other topics discussed in class, along with the creation of some story-like compositions based off of materials covered. Taught in Spanish.

Culture and Literature Courses

SPAN 3070 Hispanic World: Spain

  • This course examined the overall evolution of Spanish culture and society in Spain from the beginning of the Middle Ages to the end of their Democracy, through historical readings and the viewing and interpretation of a few related Spanish films. Not only was it focused on learning more about the history of Spain but provided me with a unique opportunity of comparing these events to those in the news today through the creation of elaborate portfolios. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 3180 Spanish Through Culture

  • This course explored Hispanic culture through an intersectional lens and allowed me to think critically about different parts of identity such as race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and class, and how these aspects effect individuals’ lives. We looked at several music videos, interviews, readings, visual representations such as posters, and movies in which we discussed and identified the problems faced by certain individuals in countries like Spain and Latin America based off these aspects that make up their identity. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 4000 Spanish Women Directors and Human Rights (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) - Independent Study

  • This course focused on the discussion of several movies produced by Spanish women directors, in which we examined their relation to women’s rights and human rights. Further comparing and connecting these ideas with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights established by the United Nations. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 3130 Spanish Lit Survey I

  • An overview of evolution of literary works in Spain from the Middle Ages up until the Golden Age. Classes involved discussing the context of each time period and how it related to the messages presented within each text, a background of the literary styles that were established during each period, as well as important information about the author to understand the full complexity of why texts chosen represented certain ideas. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 4070 Hispanic Film

  • This course focused on the history of Spanish cinema and required an analysis and comparison of techniques used by different Spanish directors in relation to their historical context. A series of readings about the films were conducted in order to learn more about the social and political aspects present in their society, and the creation of written entries allowed for comparison of these aspects and those in our society today. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 4030 Spanish American Women Writers (currently in progress)

  • This course allows for in-depth analyses of various works produced by women, such as short stories, poems, and films through the completion of essays and oral presentations or assignments. It provides background information about each author and allows us to compare the similarities between each work and how they reflect certain beliefs presented in society. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 4350 – Contemporary Hispanic Culture (Santiago de Compostela, Spain)

  • This course was offered in a serious of four parts each month in relation to Spanish culture, which included the discussion of Spanish Literature, Film and Music, Business Spanish, Medical Spanish, and specific information regarding the culture in Spain through a closer look behind the history and purpose of the Camino de Santiago.

  • Español especifico para las profesiones médicas

    • In this course, we discussed the types of public health that are offered, and the different types of professionals involved in each area. I examined the current situation of the healthcare system within Spain, looking at the differences between what is done there in comparison to the US. Taught in Spanish.

  • Español de los negocios (Business Spanish) - Santiago de Compostela, Spain

    • In this course, we looked at the different managerial positions that make up a business and their related responsibilities and increased my level of business-related vocabulary through learning exercises. Taught in Spanish.

  • La España Atlántica y El Camino de Santiago

    • A course in which we learned more about the history of the Camino de Santiago and the Apostol Santiago, who is so famously worshipped in this part of Spain. An overview of the geographical region of Galicia was studied and the difference in culture based on each province, as well as in different regions of Spain. Taught in Spanish.

  • Spanish Literature, Film, and Music

    • A course in which we looked at the popular styles of music in the region of Galicia, learned more about particular Spanish authors through in-depth research of these individuals, and a comparison of Spanish literature and their corresponding films through individual presentations. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 3010 Spanish Composition for Health Professionals (currently in progress)

  • This class examines the idea of public health in its relation to the United States and how it compares with other countries such as those of Latin America or Spain. It delves into the issue of poverty and inequality among individuals, and how it affects their overall health. Enhances medical vocabulary, while demonstrating what we learn through group work and our own health educational projects. Taught in Spanish.

LANG 3000: Introduction to Linguistics and Foreign Language Learning

  • An overview of the Spanish and English language and parts of their language structures in relation to morphology, syntax, semantics, and phonetics. Included discussions of how Spanish and English speakers acquire language differently, the importance of code-switching among bilingual speakers, and the changing of spoken language based on different geographic regions.

HIST 3400 Latin America: From Conquest to Independence

  • This class involved intensive readings of documents written during times of the colonial period in Latin America until the independence of these South American countries. These documents were analyzed through the interpretation of essays in order to demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the historical context related to each.

LANG 3030 – Volunteer Experience (Santiago de Compostela, Spain)

  • I volunteered at a combined primary and secondary school when studying abroad and was able to experience helping out in a classroom with Spanish-speaking individuals. Allowed me to practice and develop my personal teaching skills.
