Athletic Leadership Minor Courses

AL 3490 Principles of Coaching

  • This course provided me with a basic knowledge of responsibilities and duties a coach needs to perform, and the importance of having good coaching philosophy which we can abide by. It went over information in relation to gender equity in sports, as well as provided other general information in regard to athletic administration.

AL 3530 Theory of Prevention and Treatment of Athletic Injuries

  • This course allowed me to learn more about specific injuries that can occur among student athletes, their symptoms, the right course of treatment to provide if they were to occur, and who to contact after the particular injury. The study of the different body parts was necessary, to recognize where any of these injuries could occur.

AL 3620 Psychology of Coaching

  • This course looked at the types of behaviors that can be presented by athletes depending on certain situations that could be occurring in their life, and how to respond to these situations as a coach. It emphasized coaching philosophy, relaxation techniques to be used during practices, the importance of encouragement through self-talk, and setting goals so that athletes can better improve performance.

AL 3500 Scientific Basis of Coaching I: Exercise Physiology

  • This course looked at certain metabolic process within the body that come in to play when dealing with sports and activities related to sports. It provided a general overview of five different components of fitness and the physiological processes that drive these, as well as how to improve each one over time. The use of physical exercise tests were helpful in using information learned in class in a real sport context.

AL 3610 Administration and Organization of Athletic Programs

  • This courses provided me with the knowledge of basic duties and responsibilities of the Athletic Director such as facility inspection and upkeep, finances and budgeting, allocation of transportation for athletes, scheduling of games, or marketing.

AL 3760 Coaching Strength and Conditioning

  • From this course, I learned how to organize and implement strength and conditioning programs at the high school and college levels and learned about the basic principles in relation to strength training. An overview of proper training methods in order to improve performance were described, as well as the genetics side of a person which could cause differences in sports performance to occur and how to train this.

AL 3720 Coaching Basketball

  • This course was helpful in allowing me to learn more about the rules and regulations related to the sport of basketball and the different techniques needed to perform certain skills. It provided me with ways as a coach I can implement a seasonal program, how to develop practice plans, and other useful information needed to know for this sport.

AL 4000 Internship (currently in progress)

  • This internship courses allows me to have the opportunity to participate in an internship at any chosen location. I have taken the opportunity to complete this internship at my high school with a cheerleading team, in order to learn more about the coaching responsibilities within this field.

Other Minor-Related Courses

AL 3520 Scientific Basis of Coaching II: Kinesiology

  • Extensive review of the different bones and muscles of the body and looking at what types of movements they create within the body when used.

AL 3600 High School Athletics Ethical and Legal Issues (currently in progress)

  • Examines legal issues in relation to violations of Title IX and Negligence in Sports. Emphasizes the importance of demonstrating moral reasoning and ethical behavior in making decisions as an athlete, coach, or athletic administrator.

AL 3440 - Women in Athletics: Current and Historical Issues

  • This course was interesting in that it looked at the various issues related to gender equity between men and women’s teams throughout history in the US, as well as between men and women coaches within athletic departments. It also focuses on determining the differences in thinking between male and female athletes, and the different techniques and approaches a coach should use when attempting to work with each one.
